Baking with Kids: Tips to Make it Fun

by Margie Manion

baking kids

Baking with your children is a great way to spend quality time together and create lasting memories. However, it can be challenging if not approached in the right way. Here are some tips to help you make baking with your kids a fun and enjoyable experience:

Plan Ahead

Make sure you have all the ingredients you need ahead of time, so you can pull them out on a snow day or weekend. Consider using ready-made dough to save time and make things easier. This will allow you to focus on the fun part - cutting out shapes and decorating the cookies.

Prepare Everything in Advance

Get everything you will need, such as cookie cutters, colors of icing, and a variety of decorations, out ahead of time. Kids love choices, so the more options you provide, the better. Have sprinkles, chocolate chips, candies, pretzel pieces, and anything else you desire ready to go. For younger children, consider baking the cookies ahead of time.

Teach and Model

Use this opportunity to teach and model baking skills, such as measuring and mixing colors, for older children. For younger children, counting the number of eyes and buttons on a snowman cookie can be a fun and easy way to learn. Take the time to talk to your kids and find out what's going on in "their world."

Separate Containers

Provide a separate container for each child to work in. This will help them take ownership of their creations, and it's okay if they don't want their cookies mixed in with a sibling's. Plus, it's always fun for kids to share their creations with family and friends!

Baking with your kids is a great way to build connections and have fun together. By following these tips, you can make baking with your kids a fun and memorable experience that your family will look forward to year after year.

Make sure to plan ahead and prepare everything in advance, teach and model baking skills, and provide separate containers for each child to work in. These tips will help you make baking with your kids a fun and enjoyable experience that they will cherish for years to come.

So why not start a new family tradition and bake some cookies with your kids today?
