Santa's Christmas Countdown Calendar for Advent
History of Christmas countdown
Christmas countdown calendars are based on the liturgical calendar began in early Christian times.
Some of the first Popes used a "countdown" as a way to increase anticipation for the celebration of
the birth of Christ.
Advent came in to more widespread use by the Catholic Church in Roman times, and is still
celebrated today. When Sant Claus came into favor in the early 19th century, and commercialism
took over the Christmas holiday, they "borrowed" the countdown calendar and it became ____ Shopping days until Christmas.
In the U.S most families who celebrate Christmas do a blending of celebrating Christ birthday and Gifts from
Santa Claus. They often use an Advent Calendar or Wreath or Christmas Countdown Calendar.
Advent Wreath consist of five candles, four marking the 4 Sundays in Advent and one in the center marking the birth of Christ.
The Candles are encircled with a green wreath. The first, second and third Sundays in lent are marked by lighting "pink" candles and the
fourth Sunday is marked by lighting a purple candle, and on Christmas the center candle is lit to mark the birth of Christ.
