The city of Salt Lake City, which is fun and historic, offers breathtaking views from the mountaintops and valleys below, wild flowers, and a population of 910,000 residents. The 2002 Olympics brought Salt Lake City some of the best sporting facilities in the country to its doorstep.

Settlement of Salt Lake County began on July 24, 1847, as Brigham Young and a party of 148 Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley to end a 1,500 mile journey west. Within a few years, the Salt Lake Valley became a major center for trade and commerce as wagon trains carried settlers and miners westward.

Salt Lake City Utah family activities

Completed in 1893, the Salt Lake Temple, though 40 years in the making, is now a sight to behold. Its Conference Center is so large that it exceeds the capacity of Madison Square Garden in New York City, and its auditorium is expansive enough to fit a Boeing 747 jet - with plenty of room to spare. Dedicated in October 2000, this stunning building houses a 7,667-pipe organ in its auditorium alongside a 900-seat Conference Center Theater and state-of-the-arttranslation/broadcasting facilities. To add to its beauty, it features 1,400 trees and a rooftop meadow of wildflowers and grasses as well as a 67 foot long fountain cascading down its front.

Experience the beauty of Temple Square with its carefully curated flower gardens and visit the visitor centers, Conference Center, and the iconic Tabernacle. Don't miss seeing a broadcast from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Sundays - simply reserve your free seat by 9:15 A.M. You can also take in other free concerts, such as organ recitals and choir rehearsals scheduled at the Visitor Center. Take a guided tour with my family - we were thrilled to have learned about Utah's history and Mormom pioneers from knowledgeable missionaries!

In fact, Utah's current Capitol building is actually the second. Originally, the territorial government met in Fillmore, Utah, because of its central location. However, because most of the territory's population lived in and around Salt Lake City, the legislature met at different locations around the city.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Capitol building on December 26, 1912. The Capitol was dedicated on October 9, 1916. It has 404 feet of length, 240 feet of width, and 286 feet of height in the Renaissance Revival style, with 52 segmented Corinthian columns on its exterior.
